Kindergarten Rti
In addition to the Funemics program, here are some activities that our kindergarteners will work on in the RtI classroom.

(September-December)
Writing their name |
Letter-sound knowledge |
Each student has an envelope with their name printed. They match the letter tiles to the corresponding letter. We have fun mixing and fixing the letters over and over. Students also practice writing their names on wipe off sheets for correct handwriting form.
|
We use multi-sensory techniques and activities to improve letter-sound correlation such as: magnetic letters and writing letters in sand. We practice naming letters and identifying the difference between the capital and lowercase letters.

Phonemic awareness
First Sound Fluency
We work with toys to practice isolating the beginning sounds of words. For example, /mmmmmmm/ "monkey". What's the first sound? /mmmmmm/ We differentiate the difference between telling the sound versus the letter name. |
Phoneme blending and phoneme segmentation. (Phonemes are the smallest sounds in a word. The word 'cat' has 3 phonemes:
/c/ /a/ /t/.) These skills are directly related to reading success. One way we practice phoneme blending is with our "mystery word". I will say a word sound by sound and they have to blend the sounds to say the word smoothly. Ex: /m/ /o/ /p/ = mop. With phoneme segmentation the entire word is said aloud and the child has to break it into smaller pieces. ten = /t/ /e/ /n/. These skills are all done auditorily without printed text. We use colored cubes to represent the sounds. Each color stands for a unique sound. We also get up and jump out each word by jumping for each individual sound. |
