What is
Response to Intervention?

"RtI is not special education but rather a framework for providing services to students that exhibit academic difficulties through various intervention programs and models with the classroom or in a small group setting. RtI is designed to address and resolve academic challenges by integrating student assessment with instructional interventions. "​

Tier 1

• Research-based Programs in addition to the core curriculum
• Struggling Learners

  Tier 3

• Intensive Intervention  (one-to-one or very small grouping)
• RtI Classroom
• Research-based Programs in addition to the core curriculum
• Struggling learners who have not responded to Tier 2

The Role of Assessment

Universal Screens
  • Brief assessments on targeted reading/math skills (DIBELS 8th (reading), Acadience (math))
  • Administered 3x a year to all K-5 students
  • Predictive of the possible outcome of student success and identify the need for additional assistance
  • Validated by more comprehensive assessments

Formative Assessments:
Formative assessment provides feedback and information during the instructional process. Formative assessments are for learning and helps educators make instructional decisions. Examples include:
  • observations of classroom performance
  • reading records 
  • homework exercises
  • reflection journals
  • student-teacher conferences

Summative Assessments:
Summative assessment takes place after the instruction has been delivered that sums up what has been learned.  Summative assessments are about learning and helps educators make instructional decisions. Examples include:
  • State Testing
  • Tests from the core curriculum, etc.
  • Projects
  • Portfolios
